Notes from the Podium- March 30th

We're in crunch-time for concert band! All the preparation will be coming to a head on Thursday of this week. Students should be getting signed out of their classes and getting a parent signature for our trip to Maryville. It's going to be a very exciting time. I love when we get the opportunity to show off the progress and talent of the Benton Band!

The students all received a schedule for the April 2nd State Large Group Day:

12:00 Bus Departs for Maryville
1:00 Unload, unpack into NWMSU Fine Arts Building
2:00 Benton goes into warm-up room.
2:25 Benton on-stage in performance
2:55 Sight-reading
4:00 Bus Departs for Benton
5:15 Unload, unpack, leave bandroom clean!!!

Along with the big week this week, we are also selling Red Wheel to help with student accounts and our trip to New York. If you haven't already, please make arrangements to have all of the money in for our trip soon! If you are having trouble, please do not hesitate to get a hold of the band office- there are ways still to help you!

This past Friday (March 27th), we had numerous students perform as part of the District Solo and Ensemble Festival at Central High School. Congratulations should be given to all who participated! It was an honor for me to see your work come to fruition in a small group or solo performance. Those performing solos or small ensembles were:

Jacob White, clarinet
Ally Sexton, alto sax
Jordan Bullimore, trumpet
Sam Stephan, trumpet

Notes from the Podium- March 16th

The Concert Band contest season is now in full swing. We have worked hard, and now, the band is in the homestretch of our contest run. HERE ARE SOME DATES TO KNOW:

MARCH 17TH- TOMORROW!!!!

All band members are to be at Central High School by 5:30 PM to warm-up for our Pre-Contest performance at 6 PM. You will have to get your instrument and music after school from the bandroom. Dress for this performance is Concert White and Black. NO JEANS!!!

MARCH 21ST- SATURDAY!!!

BAND CLINIC-OLYMPIC DAY: We will be rehearsing from 9 AM- Noon on Saturday in a clinic for our Contest performance. Band members will need to be in the bandroom by 9 AM sharp! At 9:30 AM, every section has a clinician coming in to work with you in an instrument specific way. We are bringing in experts for each instrument! It should be an awesome day of learning. At 11, we will divide into the sections for the first ever Band Olympics. I'm not sure what the prizes will be, but at the end of the day- we will all share in a pizza lunch! It should be a great day of music and mayhem.

MARCH 27TH- NEXT FRIDAY!!

SOLO AND ENSEMBLES: All members participating in the District Solo and Ensemble Contest have a scheduled time to be a Central for performance. You want to try and get there at least 30 min before so you can have a chance to play a little bit before going in. The schedule will be posted on the blog shortly.

APRIL 2ND- THE DAY AFTER MR. S'S BIRTHDAY!

STATE LARGE GROUP IN MARYVILLE: This is a performance that will happen likely during the school day. In order to participate, all students must be passing all classes. Dress for this performance will be our Concert White and Black. Please bring these clothes with you to be stored in the bandroom.

I hope you are excited. I am anticipating a great performance! At every point this year, I have been amazed by the students that I have. There are real leaders in this band. Responsible and service-minded, we are very lucky to have you!

Notes from the Podium- March 7

The month of March always seems to fly by.... I cannot believe we are already done with the first week!!!

The concert band is hard at work preparing for our performance April 2nd for judges at the State Large Group Festival. The band will be performing for a rating in front of a panel at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville. The point has been made at many of our rehearsals that it is imperative that every student be passing every one of his or her classes to insure that they are academically able to participate. This is a school policy and WILL be followed with no exceptions. Students have been offered help from our members if they need extra tutoring! It would be a shame if irresponsibility put our performance in doubt. We need the sound of every one of our band members.

On March 17th, all band members are required for a performance at Central High School. We will be performing as part of the Pre-Contest Concert. At this performance, we will be receiving comments and help from 3 great musicians. It will be important that we have everyone there to get an accurate idea of where we stand, and so that everyone can participate in us reaching our performance goals.

On March 21st, the band will be coming in for a Super Saturday of clinics and olympics. This will be the first of what I hope will become an annual practice. During the morning, we will have different specialists for every instrument here to work with us on our contest pieces. Around 11 AM, we will break for lunch. After lunch, sections will be pitted against each other in our first Band Olympics. It should be a great day!

In addition to working toward our band performance, many of our members are hard at work preparing solos and small ensembles for the District Solo and Ensemble Festival at Central High School on March 27th. Originally, we had scheduled a Pre-Contest run of these events on March 10th, but I am going to cancel this in favor of allowing students more time to prepare. Anyone is welcome to watch and support the students performing at Central High School on the 27th. A schedule will be posted on here of all the performance times on Monday. Students receiving a Superior (I) rating at District contest will perform for State Solo and Ensemble in Columbia, MO.

PLEASE MAKE IT A POINT TO ATTEND THE BAND BOOSTER MEETING ON THURSDAY, MARCH 12TH. We will be kicking off our final fundraiser of the year. In addition to kicking off the final fundraiser, we will be collecting final payments for the New York trip. If there are any questions or concerns about the trip and payment, this meeting is the place to get them sorted out! I'm looking forward to seeing everyone there!
